COMMON QUESTIONS

Questions about coaching

The questions families ask most. If yours is not here, ask us in a free consultation.

Who do you work with?

Blackford works with students in grades 5–12. We focus on executive function, English and writing, math, science, history and social science, debate, and test prep for the HSPT, ISEE, SSAT, PSAT, and SAT. We use the first consultation to make sure our teaching team fits your student's needs.

Are sessions in person?

Yes. Sessions are in person in the South Bay at a time we arrange with you. Consultations can be by video or in person, whichever is easier.

What happens in the free consultation?

We listen to what is happening at school, explain how coaching works, and decide together whether we are the right next step. It takes about 30 minutes and can be by video or in person.

How is this different from homework help?

We can use current assignments, but the goal is to teach a repeatable skill. A session might end with completed work and a planning or writing move the student can use again. The end goal is independence.

Can you support a student who has ADHD or an IEP?

Often, yes. We teach practical planning, reading, and writing skills, and we work alongside the supports a family already has. Coaching is not diagnosis, therapy, or a replacement for school accommodations. Please share sensitive records through a separate agreed process rather than the website form.

How will I know whether it is helping?

We set a few goals you can actually observe. After every session you get a short summary of what was practiced and what still needs work. At eight weeks we sit down with you and review the plan against those goals. We are looking for two things: stronger work, and fewer questions.

How long do students stay?

As long as it is useful and no longer. We review the plan with you every eight weeks and decide together whether to continue, change the focus, or stop. Most families reduce sessions before they end them.

What are the enrollment and scheduling terms?

We discuss availability and provide the full agreement, including rescheduling and cancellation terms, before you enroll.
